Duarte Chamber and the League of Women Voters to Host Candidates Forum

 The  Duarte Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters will host a Candidates Forum for Duarte Unified School District Board and Duarte City Council candidates contending in the Nov. 5 election.

The Candidates Forum will take place on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Dr. Six School Board candidates vying for two seats on the board will be talking and answering questions from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The School Board candidates are incumbents Kenneth Bell and Reyna Diaz, running for re-election, and Jim Dinsmore, A. David Hall, Jack Ochoa, Dolores Ortiz. The eight candidates running for three City Council seats will also be talking and answering questions from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The City Council candidates are: Margaret Finlay, Tzeitel Paras-Caracci, and Phil Reyes, running for re-election, and Nick Zigic, Allen A. Field, Sheryl Lefmann, Henry Baltazar, Jr., and Samuel Kang. The public will be invited to submit written questions to the candidates that night.

Not all trash should be tossed into our garbage bins. There are certain household hazardous waste and e-waste that need to be disposed in a certain for safety reasons. Come dispose of these kinds of waste at the Household Hazardous Waste/E-Waste Roundup sponsored by the LA County Sanitation Districts. See the Event Flyer for which types of waste will be collected. Bike with the Mayor

 Join Duarte’s Mayor Margaret Finlay for a healthy family bike ride the second Saturday of every month through November 2013 on the Duarte Bike Trail. The ride entails a 3.2 mile round-trip and a great opportunity for one on one time with your Mayor!  There will also be a Bicycle Repair Clinic at 8 a.m.  at the same location, free to the public, sponsored by Gerry Delker and the Duarte Elks Club.

Date: Every second Saturday through November 2013.

Time: Meet at 8:45 a.m. and ride starts at 9:00 a.m.

Location: Royal Oaks Park

Cost: FREE - No registration required.

Bike with the Mayor participants are required to wear helmets. The City of Duarte is not responsible for any and all liability which may include injury, disability, death, loss or damage to person or property. Duarte's 11th Annual Festival of Authors

The Friends of the Duarte Library celebrates authors and their books at the 11th annual Festival of Authors on October 5, 2013, at Westminster Gardens, 1420 Santo Domingo, Duarte, from 10 am to 4 pm, where more than 50 authors appear in panel discussions and one-on-one conversations with visitors.

Featured speaker Robert K. Tanenbaum is a nationally known attorney and legal expert. He is the author of 28 books: 25 fiction and 3 non-fiction. A much sought after speaker, he has worked as a successful prosecuting attorney and high profile defender and is often seen on television shows as a legal expert and commentator.

He has been homicide bureau chief for the New York District Attorney's Office and deputy chief counsel to the congressional committee investigations into the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Most recently, he has taught Advanced Criminal Procedure at the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.

His works include the legal thrillers featuring NY D. A. Butch Karp: Escape, Capture, Betrayed and Outrage. He is also the author of true-crime books, The Piano Teacher: the True Story of a Psychotic Killer; and Badge of the Assassin. His latest novel, Tragic, a murder mystery which is the 25th installment of the Butch Carp series– will be released on August 13 by Simon and Schuster/Gallery Books.

Featured Speaker Luis J. Rodriguez is an American poet, novelist, journalist, critic, and columnist. His best-known work,Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. is the recipient of the Carl Sandburg Literary Award, among others, and has been the subject of controversy when included on reading lists in California, Illinois, Michigan, and Texas schools due to its frank depictions of gang life. Rodriguez has also founded or co-founded numerous organizations, including the Tía Chucha Press, which publishes the work of unknown writers; Tía Chucha's Centro Cultural, a San Fernando Valley cultural center; and the Chicago-based Youth Struggling for Survival, an organization for at-risk youth.

Luis's books include poetry, children's literature, a short story collection, a novel, and a nonfiction book on creating community in violent times. In 2011 the sequel to Always Running appeared, entitled It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing, which in 2012 became a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Autobiography.

Foothill Fitness Challenge

Come join in the Foothill Fitness Challenge and help Duarte to beat surrounding cities in the Fitness Challenge. At this kickoff event learn about nutritious foods and living a healthier life. Also start on your exercise goals with the 1-mile Centennial Path leisure walk. There will also be fitness stations for kids to show that exercising can be fun as well as healthy.

Teen Movie Night at Duarte Park

 The Duarte Mayor’s Youth Council will launch the third Teen Movie Night event from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Duarte Park on Friday, September 13th. Duarte Park is located at 1344 Bloomdale St., adjacent to the Duarte Teen Center.

Created for teens by teens, the event will feature a hit movie and free hot dogs, hot ribs, and hot links provided by local non-profit Marvell West. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.  The event is sponsored by Duarte Parks and Recreation and Public Safety Departments.

Leading off activities will be a Dance Battle competition. Contestants will have the opportunity to showcase their hottest dance moves and win prizes.  Local youth clubs and vendors will be onsite with giveaways. After dinner, teens can relax with friends while watching the movie and snacking on complimentary popcorn and shaved ice.  The event is open to teens in middle school and high school with School I.D.

The Duarte Mayor’s Youth Council is comprised of a group of teens grades 8 through 12, who are appointed to a one-year term by the Duarte City Council. The group meets on the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Duarte Teen Center. The Youth Council voices the opinions of local teens regarding issues that impact the youth of Duarte. Members learn from and contribute to the community by assisting in volunteer projects, networking, and communicating with city officials and community organizations. Members also participate in leadership and training programs, and contribute ideas through practical actions and programs in the community.

"Honor Among the Ashes" City of Duarte Honors the 12th Anniversary of 9-11

A memorial tribute to the victims of 9/11 will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8:45 a.m. in the City of Duarte on the grounds of Valley View Elementary School located at 237 Melcanyon in Duarte. The public is invited to share a time of inspiration and reflection in a ceremony that will include representatives from the City, School, County and State, and members of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s and Fire Departments.

Students from Valley View will be singing patriotic songs, reciting an inspirational reading, and participating in a memorial flower ceremony. For more information, contact Duarte’s Promise; The Alliance for Youth at 626 357-7931, ext. 221.
